Derrek Lee had to give Ted Lilly a little pep talk. Lilly was a little hesitant to leave the Cubs to play in the World Baseball Classic but Lee, who played in the event in 2006, convinced him it’ll be fun. “Part of me wants to be here with the guys,” Lilly said. “Derrek Lee was talking to me about it the other day and he said he had such a great time. He had a lot of encouraging things to say about it. It’s going to be fun.”
Lilly worked out Sunday at HoHoKam with Cubs pitching coach Larry Rothschild before leaving for Florida. Team USA opens play against Team Canada at Rogers Centre in Toronto on March 7. Lilly was to start the third game for the U.S. squad.
