Gregg vs. Marmol

Lou Piniella has said he’ll name the Cubs closer on Sunday. Carlos Marmol has eight career saves, and last year was named to the National League All-Star team. This spring, he’s pitched in seven games, given up six hits, walked one, and struck out 10 in eight innings. He’s also hit five batters. Kevin Gregg has appeared in nine games, given up four hits, walked two, struck out 10 over 8 1/3 innings. He also has a track record with 61 saves in the last two seasons combined.

In a poll of Chicago beat writers, the vote was split — two for Marmol, two for Gregg. Who would you pick?

I pick neither… we need a CLOSER.. someone who will be light’s out. Both Marmol and Gregg are good pitchers, but I don’t see either of them being light’s out in the 9th.

I love Marmol’s stuff, but think that Gregg is a bit more mature. I vote for Gregg.

I don’t think Marmol is ready yet at this time in Spring training. He is making too many mistakes at this time with his hit batters and errant throws. He will be the best in a month, but he isn’t the best now. So the Cubs should go with Greg at the outset.

Well if Gregg has the better man this spring then he deserves the job. Personally, I was hoping for Marmol to win the job but what ever is best for the team then I am all for it. We will always have a solid backup in Carlos if Gregg goes down with an injury.
