What to watch for

Alfonso Soriano is the eighth Cub to homer in the first two games of the season and if he connects Wednesday, could be the first since Billy Williams in 1971 to hit one in the first three games of the season.

The list of Cubs who have homered in the first two games includes:

1890 Walt Wilmot
1895 Ace Stewart
1934 Chuck Klein
1965 Roberto Pena
1971 Billy Williams
1988 Shawon Dunston
1996 Scott Servais

So far, Williams is the only Cub to homer in the team’s first three games of the season.

According to the 2008 “The Complete Baseball Record & Fact Book,” Willie McCovey
(1971 Giants) and Mark McGwire (1998 Cardinals) are the only NL players to homer
in the first four games of a season. No AL player has accomplished the feat. Thanks to Ed Hartig for doing the research.
