4/25 Quick hits

The Cubs won’t use the injuries to Aramis Ramirez, Milton Bradley or Carlos Marmol as excuses. “It doesn’t help when you lose two-thirds of your middle [of the lineup],” Lou Piniella said about the absence of Ramirez and Bradley. “That’s why it’s called a team and that’s why you have a bench. You’ve got to tough it up and get the job done. Every team has injuries. You can’t make excuses for injuries — they’re part of the equation.”

* Pitcher Marco Mateo was promoted from Class A Daytona to Double-A Tennessee. Lefty Jayson Ruhlman was promoted from Tennessee to Triple-A Iowa.

* Alfonso Soriano is hoping he isn’t called on to play second base. He doesn’t have an infielder’s glove. Kosuke Fukudome played shortstop for two seasons in Japan but he wasn’t lobbying to switch from outfield to infield any time soon.

* Correction: The Cubs were not the only Major League team to open the season with no one on the disabled list. The Reds also were injury free.

* The Cardinals are batting .322 with runners in scoring position; the Cubs are hitting .222. Chicago also ranks 11th in batting average. “We’re not going to finish in the bottom tier hitting-wise, or we shouldn’t,” Piniella said. “I don’t think we will. That means we have some catching up to do, hitting-wise.”

It really shows that we do miss Mark and Woody. Fontenot and Miles are not the answer. When all said and done we need to shake up our line up even more. I believe we should move Soriano back to second. The reason for this is because Fontenot is not the everyday 2nd baseman. We need to see what Hoffpauir can bring to the table. I would platoon him and Johnson in left. Fontenot plays better when comes off the bench.
I know it is early but it has been very frustrating to watch a team with this much talent play this erratic. We need a player to set up and lead…

Even though it’s still very early in the season, you cannot go into St. Louis and let them beat up on you like they did. Cubs better start hitting. You have to compete. This series will give St. Louis all the confidence they need. If the Cubs don’t pick it up, they’ll be 10 games out by the end of May. C’mon guys.

I had a bad feeling about trading Mark Derosa, Bradley is not going to play enough to have an impact. I think the Cubs upper management ruined the chemistry on this team. It is a team of individuals now, not good. Lou can switch the line up all he wants, the Cubs have to play as a team!

No way would I platoon Johnson and Haufpauir in left, you gotta leave Soriano in there and just deal with his sub par defense, it’s one of many Hendry mistakes we Cubs fans have to live with, moving Soriano to second would just compound and magnify Hendry’s futility. I do agree about getting Haufpauir more time, but only at first base, you can’t screw with this kid and force him to be an outfielder just because Lee is stagnating at first base, Hendry should realize the thing to do is trade Lee even if eating most of his contract to make room for the left handed bat Lou wants…Haufpauir! Hendry already ate some of Marquis’ and Vicacaino’s contract, why stop there Jim? At least by trading Lee and eating his contract you would be making amends for your previous bone-headed moves. THERE IS NO MISTAKING that Hendry weakened this team if only for trading of DeRosa, not to mention letting Wood walk, and trading Marquis (NOW for nothing). Look at where we are having trouble: bullpen (Marquis), second base (DeRosa), third base (DeRosa), bullpen (Wood), right field (DeRosa).
For crying out loud, how can this guy keep his job????
