First name basis
Baseball historian Ed Hartig passed this along and wanted to try to give Cubs fans something to chuckle about in what has become a frustrating weekend with all the injuries:
With the acquistion of Ryan Freel, the Cubs roster will now include three Ryans: Freel, Dempster and Theriot. As recently as 1978, the Cubs had five players with the same name when they had five Daves: Geisel, Johnson, Kingman, Rader and Roberts.
However, the club with the most common first name was the 1957 Cubs team with
eight Bobs: Bobby Adams, Bob Anderson, Bobby Del Greco, Bob Lennon, Bobby
Morgan, Bob Rush, Boe Speake and Bob Will. And the manager was, of course, Bob Scheffing.
