A salute & Sosa

Lou Piniella, who was Randy Johnson’s manager in Seattle from 1993-98, planned to contact the left-hander to congratulate him on his 300th win.
“I had the pleasure of seeing him pitch first-hand for seven, eight years in Seattle and it was fun to watch,” Piniella said Friday. “He’s a competitor, great stuff, didn’t like to lose and it’s a tribute to him that he stayed around this long to get his 300th win.”
* Piniella was not in Chicago during Sammy Sosa’s years. Sosa has hinted he will formally announce his retirement soon. Is he a Hall of Famer?
“You look at his numbers, and obviously, they’re Hall of Fame numbers,” Piniella said of the former Cubs right fielder, who holds several team records, and posted three 60-homer seasons (1998, 1999 and 2001). “He had a really prolific home run career. You put his numbers offensively with other people in the Hall of Fame and you’ve got to concur that he belongs.”
