Holding on

Lou Piniella noted the Cubs’ bullpen is ranked 12th in the National League.

“I actually like our bullpen better than that,” Piniella said Tuesday. “If we could just cut down on our walks, those numbers would come down in a big, big hurry.”

One of those guilty of too many walks is Carlos Marmol, who has walked six over four-plus innings in five appearances this month.

“I told him today I have all the confidence in the world in him and I haven’t even thought about removing him from that spot,” Piniella said of Marmol.

Is the right-hander trying to do too much, maybe trying to show he should be the closer? Piniella said no.

“At this time last year, I was a little concerned [he was thinking] about the All-Star team,” Piniella said. “I think he’s just in a little bit of a tough spell here and he’s got to work his way through it.”
