7/6 Roster moves

Aramis Ramirez, Reed Johnson and Angel Guzman were activated from the disabled list on Monday, and Sam Fuld and Kevin Hart optioned to Triple-A Iowa. Right-hander David Patton was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a right groin strain to make room on the 25-man roster.

Lou Piniella said the decisions were tough.

“I don’t think anything was clear cut,” Piniella said. “We’ve got some outfield protection now with [Jeff] Baker and that made the Sam Fuld situation a little easier. It’s not easy sending out kids — I don’t enjoy it.”

Patton felt a twinge on Saturday, and wasn’t available Sunday. With the moves, the Cubs now have 11 pitchers on the roster, not 12.

I’m confused – doesn’t this put the roster at 24? Add three people, demote two, DL one, trade one. Three additons, four subtractions. What am I missing?

I believe Freel had been designated for assigment previously, and we brought up Samardzija then? I forget who we brought up, but Freel was not on the 25 man roster anymore….

Freel was designated for assignment on July 2 when the Cubs acquired Jeff Baker from the Rockies

Baker isn’t doing well this year. Another Freel? Fuld is such a spark plug. He really made a difference. I’m disappointed.

Jeff Baker is just another Hendry question mark and feeble attempt at replacing DeRosa. You would think that we have enough infielders with Blanco, Fox and Hoffpauir that it would have made more sense to stick with Fuld for the defensive outfield replacement needed with the two iron-gloved corner outfielders in Soriano and Bradley. But again, Hendry must have his “super utility, combo outfielder/infielder” in Baker…forget about his horrendous average….THIS KID CAN PLAY ANYWHERE!!! Another brilliant move by Hendry.
