7/7 Dempster on DL; Zambrano to start

Ryan Dempster was placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday with a right toe fracture, and Carlos Zambrano will start in Game 2 against the Braves. Kevin Hart, who had been optioned to Triple-A Iowa on Monday, was called back to the big league team. Hart will start Wednesday vs. the Braves.

This means he is eligible to come off the DL, 18 Jul at Washington. If this turns out he broke his toe kicking something he should be disciplined, as someone on less rest or a making a sport start out of the pen, is going to have to start against the Cards this weekend, when we are already fighting, and will continue to fight, for this division; and we are going to be going on short rest anyway with 4 games in 3 days.

Hopefully it was one of those freak injuries, nothing serious, and he takes down the Nats in a few weeks.

The injury will give Dempster some time to rest and get out of the funk he’s in at the moment. His last few starts haven’t been his best. Our bullpen is doing well though, the bats are coming around, and we’ve still got some good young arms in the farm system that may benefit from Dempster’s absence.

He absolutely needs the rest – physically AND mentally. Remember he has sick daughter at home – anyone would have a hard time concentrating on their job in that situation, let alone a job like Dempster’s. Who cares HOW he did it? Maybe it was divine intervention telling him to take a break… I have no doubt that as his daughter improves he will be able to concentrate fully on the game and show us all why he’s one of the best. My prayers are (and have been) with him and his family since I first heard about Riley.
