7/27 Hall of Fame
Rickey Henderson played for Lou Piniella in 1987 and ’88 with the New York Yankees. In ’88, the speedy outfielder led the Yankees and the American League with 93 stolen bases. On Sunday, Henderson was inducted into Baseball’s Hall of Fame in Cooperstown.
“He’s a great player, and the best leadoff guy, in my opinion, ever in baseball,” Piniella said. “This guy had the combination of speed and power that was unparalleled. At the same time, he really played left field exceedingly well. I thought he and Barry Bonds were the two best left fielders I’ve ever seen covering ground. He can beat you with his legs, he can beat you with his bat, he can beat you with his glove. He’s a sure fire Hall of Famer.”
