7/27 History lesson
This is the second season in Cubs franchise history that the team has endured at least an eight-game losing streak, only to move into first place later in the same year. The other time was in 2001.
On May 9, 2001, the Cubs were in first at 21-12. After dropping eight in a row, they stood 21-20 and in fourth place on May 18. The Cubs then won 12 straight and held first place May 26-Aug. 12 and again Aug. 14-17. They finished third, five games back. No Cubs team has ever suffered through a losing streak of at least eight games and still qualified for the postseason. Thanks to baseball historian Ed Hartig for the info.
