7/28 Still slamming
Alfonso Soriano’s walkoff grand slam in the 13th inning Monday was the second-latest walk off slam in terms of innings played in Cubs history. On May 28, 1980, the Cubs’ Cliff Johnson hit a game-ending slam in the 14th off Montreal’s Dale Murray.
But there’s more to the story. Johnson actually was a member of the Cleveland Indians in May 1980. He hit the home run on Aug. 8, 1980, in the completion of the game which started May 28. According to MLB rules, the home run is credited to the date the game began, which is when Johnson was still with the Indians. The Cubs acquired him on June 23 that year.
Now you know the rest of the story. Thanks to Elias Sports Bureau and Ed Hartig for the info.
