8/7 Time out

Am skipping Cubs @ Rockies, but want to answer couple Inbox questions:

Q: I can’t help but think is there something to Koyie Hill? I know he can’t hit, and he’s not real great on defense, but the Cubs seem to play better whenever he’s starting. I’d be interested to find out what the Cubs record is with him starting. Do you have that info? — Jess H., North Carolina

A: The Cubs are 28-17 in his starts this year, and 46-26 in his 72 starts since the beginning of the 2007 season. He may not be hitting, but he has a good feel for the game and the pitchers, which may be that “something.”

Q: Tom Gorzelanny was dominant in his first start as a Cub, and will hopefully keep it up until Ted Lilly returns from the DL. Is the plan to put Gorzelanny in the ‘pen when Lilly is reactivated, or to option him to Triple A? It seems to me that it’d be an awful shame to stick him back in the Minors when the Cubs have been so hard-up for reliable left-handed relief pitching. — Elliott N., Mt. Pleasant, MI

A: Lou Piniella was asked the same question on Wednesday and didn’t have an answer either. Gorzelanny does have options left, so he could go back to the Minors. It wouldn’t be for long — Sept. 1 is right around the corner. Lilly could be back for the series in San Diego Aug. 17-19. Somehow, these things have a way of working themselves out.

What do you think about the Cubs picking up Smoltz. He can still get his fastball up to 92-93.
By the way thank God Soriano is finally out of the lead off spot. Did you notice the Cubs started winning when they finally moved him?

I’d rather see them pick up Vincente Padilla. I’m not sayin’ Smoltzie has lost his desire, he just ran outa gas. At this point he’s better off fishin’. I think he knows it deep down but he still wants to compete. That’s fine, but the Cubs are not in position to just take a chance on a good competitor. We need to win and NOW.
