8/12 Samardzija

Jeff Samardzija was roughed up in his first ML start but the Cubs are trying to get by while Carlos Zambrano and Ted Lilly recuperate from injuries.

“I think he’ll give us a good effort,” Cubs GM Jim Hendry said before the game. “I’m not here to evaluate him at all.  When you’re in the spot we’re in, we’re just trying to win game by game. His future will have nothing to do with tonight.”

Good thing. Samardzija gave up seven runs on eight hits over 3 1/3 innings, striking out four vs. the Phillies.

Yeah, up and down; up and down. Let’s see how we can mess with the kids head. Maybe he’ll end up like Mark Prior. But since Hendry’s not there to evaluate him…well, maybe it will be okay since Hendry hasn’t got a clue!

Wait a minute…they already have messed with the kid. See last night’s game.
