9/7 Lee & Lilly
Derrek Lee and Ted Lilly were the heroes for the Cubs on Monday. Lilly was asked what other players can learn from watching Lee, who hit two home runs and has 31 for the season:
“There’s a lot that anyone can take form Derrek as he goes about his business,” Lilly said. “Derrek didn’t get off to a torrid start at the beginning of the season. He’s no different now than he was in April. He was really grinding it out and searching and trying to find a way to get his stroke going. You never saw Derrek in a panic or overly frustrated. He wasn’t happy with himself but he kept pushing along and here he is now. I think that’s a tribute not only to the player he is but the person he is.”
And Lee on Lilly?
“He’s been good,” Lee said of the lefty, now 11-8 after Monday’s 4-2 win. “He had a great first half, made the All-Star team. He’s continued that in the second half. He should probably have more wins the way he’s pitched. Since he’s been here, Teddy’s been nothing but a winner. When he takes the mound, you feel you have a shot to win the baseball game.”
* Lee now has 20 homers and 57 RBIs in 58 games since July 1. He has 22 career multi-homer games. And the 31 homers are the most since he hit 46 in 2005.
