9/7 Tennessee, Iowa end regular season

Double-A Tennessee ended the regular season Monday with a 5-4 win over Huntsville. Marco Carrillo (4-1) picked up the win in relief of starter Casey Coleman, who only threw three innings. Coleman is scheduled to start in Game 2 of the divisional playoffs.

The Smokies open the playoffs Thursday against Huntsville. Jeremy Papelbon (6-5) is scheduled to start for Tennessee against Huntsville’s Josh Butler (2-1).

* Iowa lost its season finale, 7-2, to Albuquerque, and finished the season, 72-72. Jeff Samardzija (6-6) took the loss, giving up five runs on seven hits over 4 2/3 innings. He struck out five. Samardzija was expected to join the Major League team Tuesday.

This season, Iowa’s J.R. Mathes won 12 games in the Pacific Coast League, good for third best overall. He also ranked 10th in the league with a 3.62 ERA. Blake Parker’s 22 saves ranked fifth in the league. Despite being with the big league team since July 31, Sam Fuld ranked third in the PCL with 10 triples.
