9/19 Smokies lose in playoffs

The Tennessee Smokies season is over. Jacksonville beat the Cubs’ Double-A team, 7-3, Saturday night to win the Southern League championship, taking the best of five series, 3-1. Andrew Cashner took the loss, giving up four runs on four hits and three walks over four innings. Second baseman Tony Thomas had two RBIs for the Smokies. Elih Villanueva picked up the win and also hit a three-run homer.

Is anyone good enough to be called up from AA and help the Cubs, I wonder?

The Smokies’ Tyler Colvin and James Adduci are possibilities, but the Cubs want to be careful. If they’re called up, it will affect their service time. If they aren’t added, it would be a procedural decision, not a reflection on their skills.

Carrie, does the promotion of Colvin to the big leagues mean we are out of options for 40 year old minor leaguers like Taguchi??? I sure hope the service time thing doesn’t come back and haunt us regarding Colvin. I can understand the Cubs priority of being careful with the service time of their young prospects, I mean why bring them up at all when we can sign proven major league talent that hustles and plays outstanding baseball like Bradley and Soriano? That’s the Hendry motive, sign the
big splashY free agents so the front office looks like “we’re doing something big, woo hoo!!!”
