11/5 AFL update – Thursday's game

Andrew Cashner threw four scoreless innings in the Mesa Solar Sox’s 8-1 win over the Peoria Javelinas in Arizona Fall League play Thursday. Cashner, the Cubs’ No. 1 pick in 2008, did not walk a batter and struck out four. Starlin Castro, who began the day leading the AFL in batting, and Michael Brenly each had two hits for Mesa.

Three Cubs pitching prospects all appeared in the game. James Russell, John Gaub and Blake Parker each threw one inning in relief. The Solar Sox play Friday at Surprise.

Thanks for the updates guys! It is really not surprising that Andrew Cashner threw four scoreless innings in the Mesa Solar Sox’s 8-1 win over the Peoria Javelinas in Arizona Fall League play Thursday. This is far more interesting than Brandon Spikes eye gouging video controversies. Well I just hope Cashner will continue to do his best and push his luck until the end of this season. Good luck!

The Cub site isn’t working so I’ll post here….. I think that was rude of you to call out Reed Johnson for playing so few games inferring that he wasn’t able to play more…. That stat heavy manager Lou sat Reed Johnson in most of those missed games…. and after a couple of months of watching Fukudome and Soriano stink, Reed came in off the bench and started winning games.. The Cubs were in 1st when he got hurt.. You can’t knock Reed Johnson for Lou picking the wrong lineup and failing to know who had the hot hand…. Lou should have played a little basketball in his youth at PG so he could have learned how to win…When a guy is dialed in, you give him the ball…. Stats and BS don’t matter… It’s all about the flow… If the Cubs fail to sign Reed Johnson because of stats, I will just go ahead and expect the Cubs to lose as long as Hendry is GM and Lou is manager…. Reed Johnson delivers what he promises in his contract… regardless of what year he is in… try and say the same for Soriano… Poor writing Carrie…. We want the Cubs to win… Tell the truth and save the propaganda.. Reed Johnson is the best Outfielder the Cubs have… It would be stupid to let him walk… and Harden is just like Dempster….. He will get stronger and stronger with the right pitching coach and manager… He could be a great deal at a great price just like Dempster was…. Tommy John works..

The Cubs — and I — know the story behind the stats, that Reed was hurt. That’s why he played so few games. He has issues with his back. When healthy, Reed is the best defensive outfielder on the Cubs. Here’s what Hendry has to decide: Can I find a less expensive but productive option at CF? And there are stats that matter. Reed most likely sat against RHPs. He batted .324 against LHP, and .206 against RHPs.

Rather than signing a guy like mike cameron or rick ankiel which is the current rumors to play centerfield (unless you can get cameron very very cheap on a one year deal. I would like to see brad snyder, sam fuld, and tyler colvin battle it out for the starting job. If Colvin or Snyder wins then definitely keep Fuld for his speed and defense as a backup. Snyder and Colvin are both lefties both hit for power and the only stats I could find for Snyder with splits is the winter league he is playing in right now where he is hitting .375 versus lefties and .321 versus righties. With 4hr 19rbi’s a .977 Ops 6 sb 1cs 15bb 16so in 23 games. He hit .278 with 14hr and a .883 ops in 69 games for the Iowa cubs this year but missed some of the season due to injury.

Snyder hit .290 (18-for-62) vs LHP with six homers and 17 RBIs and hit .274 (48-for-175) against RHP with eight homers and 27 RBIs at Iowa. He was slowed after hurting his wrist. The only problem with your suggestion is he seems better fit in RF, not CF. He’s also not on the Cubs’ 40-man roster. Colvin could play CF, but is he ready to handle big league pitching? At Double-A Tenn this year, he hit .320 vs LHP and .290 vs RHP. Only issue with Fuld is he needs to stay strong (and avoid injury with his tendency to crash into walls).

Thanks for the stats Carrie.

MUSKATHERE IS A GUY THAT CAN PLAY 2 INF SPOTS 2B /SS/ AND ALL THE OF SPOTS HE CAN LEAD OFF HAS A HIGH OBP HITS FOR A GOOD AVG AND HAS THE SPEED TO STEAL 40 BASEHIS NAMEIS RUDDY YANHE IS ALSO A FREE AGENT THATBE LONE TO NO ONE NELSON PEREZIS AGOOD LOKING OF DOWN ON THE CUBS FARM RUDDY SEEM TO PLAY TEAM BALL HE WILL DO WHAT EVER IT TAKE TO WIN AND MAKE US CUB FAN FORGET ABOUT MARK DEROSA BY THE WAY HE WILL PLAY TEAM BALL

Hendry even being in the position needing to ask himself if he can find less expensive but productive option for ANY position is JUST AN ON-GOING PREDICAMENT he finds himself in again and again because he couldn’t do the job in the first place. How many years in a row has this guy been scrambling to find a trio of outfielder. Hell, he’d be looking for a GOOD left fielder if he didn’t blow it with the Soriano 8 year deal. And he probably has convinced himself that “at least left field is settled” Settled my donkey Jim. I guess he keeps his job by continually creating holes in his roster…
