11/5 AFL & winter ball update

Michael Brenly smacked a two-run homer in the Mesa Solar Sox’s 8-5 win over the Peoria Javelinas in Arizona Fall League play Wednesday. Brenly is the son of Cubs television analyst Bob Brenly, and was a late add to the Mesa team, replacing catcher Welington Castillo. Mesa and Peoria meet again in Mesa on Thursday.

In Venezuela, Andres Blanco scored two runs and hit a double and Robinson Chirinos had one hit in Magallanes’ 6-3 win over Margarita. In Mexico, Brad Snyder hda two hits, including his fourth home run, in Mexicali’s 6-3 loss to Mazatlan. Matt Camp also had a hit, and was batting .351.

Nelson Perez, who batted .251 with 11 homers and 65 RBIs for Class A Peoria, was hitting .405 for Toros del Este in the Dominican Republic. He has primarily been used as the designated hitter, and has four multi-hit games out of 12.

Is it just me or do the Cubbies seem to have a stronger group of kids in the farm system than they have had in recent years? Are we poised to see a younger Cub team soon?

It’s not just you, I noticed the same thing.
This will really sting Hendry as he has continually OVERRATES the free agent/trade market and has now STUNNINGLY underestmated his own organization’s talent.
Leaving him with a crop of kids with nohwere to go but trades to other teams? Leaving Hendry exposed to getting fleesed?? The only openings are CF and 2B and it seems Hendry is determined to go outside the organiztion to fill those needs. Who knows, maybe behind closed doors Tom Ricketts will advise Hendry to finally promote from within and let Fuld, Castro and Blanco fill some spots. This is what happens when ANY BUMBLING GM handicaps his own organization with no-trade contracts and lengthy contracts to one-dimensional and over-rated players. Hendry sure does need somebody to advise him. Let the youth break in at everyday postions and then put the bulk of your money into pitching from oustside the organization if you must. But to keep bringing in POSITION player after POSITION player that are past their prime or more suited to being a DH is not the way to go.

been a cubs’ fan since 1945. query: i’m thinking that, perhaps, the front office could package jake fox, micah hoffpauir and perhaps a pitcher or two and pick up a quality outfielder to replace milton bradley. is my thinking bad? what say you?

i know a few cubs’ players want to see milton bradley happy and, perhaps, give him a second chance. but can you really change stripes on this man? i don’t blame jim h. though. sometimes it is a crapshoot when acquiring a new player. what are your thoughts?

SOMETIMES it’s a crapshoot?? It’s ALWAYS a crapshoot when it comes to Hendry’s free agents…Soriano, Fukodome, Bradley, Miles, Gregg (was Gregg a trade? So what…still a crapshoot). Hendry has enough crapshoot personel to open up a crapshoot outlet mall.
And no matter what “valuable” talent Hendry packages to get an outfielder to replace Bradley…he’s gotta trade Bradley first. Better to just concentrate dumping Bradley and letting Fuld/Johnson handle centerfield, put Fukodome back in right field where he always belonged, take it on the chin, get through 2010 and hope that a new GM takes over in 2011 and he/she along with Sandberg as manager can start a run of championship teams.

Carrie Muskat I was wondering if there is any chance that brad snyder gets a chance to prove himself in spring training as a centerfielder? It is my understanding that unless he is added to the 40 man roster he will be a minor league free agent. Or atleast as a 4th or fifth outfielder. I was looking at his numbers defensively he looks pretty good I heard he has a pretty good arm too . He’s a lefty, a power hitter, can play anywhere in the outfield. Good batting average and Ops. His knock is “an inability to make consistent contact” according to the cub reporter it is also thought he may be a late bloomer like Casey McGehee and Garret Jones. I would like to see him retained on the roster and given a good look at spring training. See what rudy jaramillo can do with him. Or we could let him go like Casey McGehee and he can go have a helluva year for some other team. I would atleast like him to get a chance he has played 7 seasons in the minors so he has oayed his dues. I don’t see what is lost here if they give him a look.

I HAVE BEEN TALKING ABOUT THE BOYS ON THE FARM FOR ABOUT 2 OR3 MONTHS WE HAVE YOUNG TALENT AT 2B;SS AND CF THAT HAVE THE SPEED AND BATTING AVG TO HELP THE BIG CLUBAND THEY PLAY GOOD DEFENCE THERE AS AT LESS 3 CF /2SS / 2 2B/AND AT LEAST2GUY THAT CAN PLAY EVERY OF SPOT AND SOME INTERCHANCABLE INF THAT CAN SAVE MONEY AND TAKE RISK OUT OF THE FREE AGENT MARKETAND ITWILL MAKE US A BETTER TEAM OVER ALL
