12/10 No decision yet re: Spring Training

The Cubs Thursday denied a report that the team has made up its mind about Spring Training, and is relocating to Florida. An official decision was expected next month. The team is looking at two sites near Naples, Fla., and two sites in Arizona, including one in Mesa. The city of Mesa, meanwhile, has proposed building additional batting cages at the Cubs’ Fitch Park complex at a cost of $750,000. They would be ready in time for Spring Training this year.

I think it would be a mistake for the Cubs to move their spring training to Florida…….are they not outdrawing every other team in the area? Do they lack support from the local businesses and population? Sure, maybe the facilities need updating or even replacement, but the Cubs are part of the winter Arizona experience for a baseball fan. Naples, Florida would be a poor choice and should not even be a thought in the minds of the new ownership. Let the Brewers have that part of the world.

RICKETTS I THINK IS GETTING VERY BAD ADVICE. THE CUBS ARE “GODS” IN ARIZONA. I AM SURE THE CITY OF MESA WOULD DO ANYTHING TO PLEASE THEM . THE CITY MAKES FANS WANT TO RETURN TO THE PARK.IN FL. THE CUBS WOULD BE JUST ANOTHER TEAM.PAUL SULLIVAN IN THE TRIB SAID THEY ARE MOVING TO FL.,AND I AGREE WITH SULLIVAN.IF RICKETTS IS SUCH A GOOD CUB FAN, WHY IS IT THAT HE HAS NEVER SEEN A SPRING TRAINING GAME IN ARIZONA? ONE GAME IN ARIZONA AND HE WOULD NEVER THINK ABOUT RELOCATING TO FL.–PEOPLE BUY HOMES IN AZ. JUST TO FOLLOW THE CUBS.IF THE DEALS ARE EQUAL ,WHY WOULD THEY EVEN THINK ABOUT RELOCATING?I THINK RICKETTS HAS HIS MIND MADE UP THAT THE TEAM IS GOING TO FL.–I COULD CITE MANY,MANY REASONS TO REMAIN IN ARIZONA BUT THE BOTTOM LINE THEY ARE BEING FEED A BILL OF FALSE GOODS—BE THE FIRST TEAM IN 20 YRS. TO GO FROM AZ TO FL AND MAKE A VERY, VERY DECISION.RICKETTS WOULD BE A LOSER BEFORE THE TEAM HIS THE FIELD.

I HAVE READ BETWEEN THE LINES WHEN CRANE KENNEY SAID “THE EASY DECISION WOULD BE TO STAY IN ARIZONA” AND “WE HAVE TO THINK ABOUT THIS TEAM 50 YEARS FROM NOW”. TO ME THESE ARE CODES FOR – WE ARE GOING TO RELOCATE TO FL.—–TOO BAD THE DECISION CAN’T WAIT UNTIL AFTER MARCH 2010 WHEN RICKETTS COULD GO TO BOTH STATES AND THEN COMPARE SPRING TRAINING SITES. I HAVE BEEN TO BOTH AZ. AND FL. AND AZ. WINS OUT BIG TIME.–MAKES ONE WONDER IF THERE ARE ANY DEALS TO RELOCATE THAT ARE NOT IN THE PAPERS.OTHERWISE ,WHY WOULD THE CUBS WANT TO GO SUCH A HILLBILLY STATE ?ITS RICKETTS MONEY AND HE CAN DO WHATEVER HE WANTS BUT HE AND HIS FAMILY IN THE FUTURE MIGHT REGRET SIGNING A LONG TERM LEASE TO GO TO FL.—THE GOV. OF FL. SHOULD TRAVEL TO AZ. AND SEE ALL THE PALM TREES. WISH I WAS IN AZ. AND NOT IN CHICAGO WITH ALL THIS SNOW. HOPE RICKETTS HAS HIS EYES OPEN AND ALSO HAS AN OPEN MIND.

Anybody that has experienced Florida and Arizona spring training should have at least 1/2 a brain to know the true meaning of Spring Training. Guaranteed great weather with incredibly low humidity, easy access in/out of ball parks,…oh let’s not ignore the facts and reasons why teams have been leaving Florida these past years. JDP
