12/14 Naples update

So far, Naples’ efforts to lure the Cubs to Florida for Spring Training has been a private venture. On Monday, Fifth Avenue Advisors and Esmark Inc., the two companies behind the effort, will host an invitation only reception in Naples in an attempt to get some members of the Collier County community involved.

“We’re transitioning from a private company to a community effort,” Gary Price, a partner in Naples-based Fifth Avenue Advisors told the Naples Daily News. “This is the kickoff for that.”

Neither Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts nor team president Crane Kenney will attend.

Price says the Cubs moving to Florida is still a longshot. “There has absolutely been no commitment from the Cubs that they are leaving Arizona to come to Florida,” Price said. “I think we continue to be a long shot, but every step becomes a better opportunity.”

Ricketts and Kenney have visited the Naples area, and met with Florida Gov. Charlie Crist in Tallahassee to discuss moving the Cubs from Mesa, Ariz., to the Sunshine State.

Price told the Naples Daily News his team expects to make a presentation to the Cubs in the next 60 days. Earlier this month, Kenney told Chicago reporters he expects an announcement in January.

ARE THE FIFTH AVENUE ADVISORS AND ESMARK AS FINANCIALLY SOLID AS THE CITY OF MESA(BOND ISSUES) OR THE NATIVE AMERICAN COMMUNITY(TAX BREAKS) THAT WOULD DO WHATEVER IT TAKES TO KEEP THE CUBS IN ARIZONA? I DO NOT KNOW THE ANSWER, BUT I LEAN TOWARD FAVORING THE AZ. CONCERNS.THE CUBS ARE “GODS” IN ARIZONA, BUT THEY WOULD BE JUST ANOTHER TEAM IN FLORIDA. THE NATIVE AMERICA’S ARE BUILDING A GREAT NEW STADIUM IN SCOTTSDALE FOR THE ROCKIES AND DIAMONBACKS.WHEN THIS PARK IS COMPLETED ALL THE AZ. TEAMS WILL PLAY IN THE PHOENIX AREA, WITH VERY LITTLE TRAVEL TIME.IF RICKETTS TRULY IS THINKING ABOUT THE NEXT 50 YEARS ,WHY WOULD HE MOVE TO FLORIDA ? I WILL NOT SPEND MY TRAVEL DOLLARS TO WATCH THE CUBS IN FLORDIA. MANY PEOPLE I KNOW GO TO ARIZONA EVERY SPRING TO SEE THE CUBS.

Okay, I have to say that I would really like to see the Cubs stay in AZ.

I live relatively close to AZ and my every-other-year trip to camp would be very tough to manage if they moved to Florida. Obviously, that is a very selfish reason!!

Also, Carrie, has Naples promised the Cubs a new stadium? I know the Native Americans have mentioned a new stadium and everyone knows that is what the Cubs want. Even though Wrigley is WAAAAAYYYYY behind the times on facilities, at least the spring training facility would be nice.

Either way, I really don’t think the Cubs should stay in Hohokam if they have a chance at a new stadium somewhere else.
