1/6/10 Mesa update

The city of Mesa was expected to decide whether to spend $684,000 to build covered batting cages at the Cubs’ Fitch Park facility by the end of the week.

City manager Chris Brady told the Arizona Republic a decision should be made by Thursday at the latest and that if approved, the work could still be done in time for 2010 Spring Training. Pitchers and catchers report to Mesa on Feb. 18.

The city is still waiting to hear if the Cubs will keep their Spring Training headquarters in Mesa or move to Naples, Fla. Brady met with Cubs officials on Dec. 18 in Chicago and came away from the meeting optimistic that the team would remain in Arizona. Officials connected with the Naples proposal still plan on having a rally sometime this month in Collier County.

The Cubs were expected to make a decision this month.

EASY DECISION FOR RICKETTS TO MAKE: OPEN MY ARMS AND WORK WITH MESA IN BUILDING A GREAT SPRING TRAINING COMPLEX FOR YEARS TO COME. THOSE OF US IN CHICAGO WHO HAVE GONE TO ARIZONA AND FLORIDA DURING THE MONTH OF MARCH TO WATCH BASEBALL CAN NOT UNDERSTAND WHY THE CUBS WOULD WANT TO DOWNGRADE TO NAPLES. LOTS OF TRAVEL TIME IN FLORIDA FOR THE TEAM AND ITS FANS. MORE RAINOUTS IN FL.AND GAMES CAN NOT BE RESCHEDULED IN THE SPRING. ARIZONA HAS GREAT MARCH WEATHER. THE CITY OF MESA LOVES THE CUBS AND MAKES FANS FEEL WELCOME.NO TEAM HAS LEFT ARIZONA FOR FLORIDA IN 20 YEARS. WONDER WHY? IF THE CUBS RELOCATE, A CURRENT FL. TEAM WILL COME TO MESA AND MAKE A TON OF MONEY IN MARCH. AS BARRY ROZNER WROTE ,CUBS GOING TO FLORIDA IS A BAD BUSINESS DECISION. PAUL SULLIVAN ALSO FAVORS MESA OVER NAPLES. IF RICKETTS GOES TO NAPLES TO WILL KICK HIMSELF IN THE FUTURE. MY GROUP WILL NOT TRAVEL TO NAPLES TO WATCH OUR CUBS. WE WILL WAIT UNTIL THEY ARRIVE AT 1060 W. ADDISON.

ON TUESDAY I WAS ON THE INTERNET AND CALLING A 1-800 NUMBER AT THE SAME TIME TRYING TO ORDER CUBS SPRING TRAINING TICKETS FOR MESA. TOOK ME FOREVER TO GET THROUGH. PURCHASED TICKETS FOR ME AND MY WIFE AND MY GROUP FROM CHICAGO. ALL THE TIME I HAVE SPENT IN FLORIDA I CAN NOT THINK TICKET SALES WOULD BE AS STRONG AS ARIZONA. HOPE RICKETTS CALLS THE MESA BOX OFFICE OR TICKETS.COM OR WHOEVER I PLACED THE ORDERS WITH AND SEES THAT FANS CAN NOT WAIT TO BUY CUB SPRING TRAINING TICKETS IN ARIZONA. IF THEY GO TO NAPLES ,TICKETS WILL BE EASIER TO GET. I CAN CALL A MONTH AFTER THEY GO ON SALE THE THE AGENT WILL ASK ME “WHERE DO YOU WANT TO SIT”.

2012 Spring Training schedule: Red Sox, Yankees, Phillies, Cardinals, Twins, Rays, Mets, Marlins, Astros. Oh that would be the schedule if they come to Florida. Its about time for the Cubs to face real competition and play with the big boys or stay in Arizona and play a lot of lack luster teams. Rainouts in Florida during March is a rarity. As a Cubs season ticket holder living full-time in Florida, some of you show your ignorance about the weather. Also the Daytona Cubs would move to Naples and play in a top facility.

I won’t pretend to know much about the weather in either AZ or FL being to both states only 3 times each in my life but I would say in defense of all us FL weather eeegnoraymes that the “competition” faced in spring training is not much of a factor for lobbying a team to a certain spring training facility as most spring training games do not play the full roster used during the regular season. I can’t imagine any Cubs’ fan whether or not ignorant of FL weather thinking that a more “challenging” spring training schedule will cement the chances of a World Series appearance. However, if FL had a state law banning Jim Hendry from participating in any way, shape or form from any Cubs activities THEN I would certainly root for FL!!!!
