1/10/10 Cubs Convention attendees

New Hall of Famer Andre Dawson and new center fielder Marlon Byrd will be among the players participating in the 25th annual Cubs Convention, which kicks off next Friday at the Chicago Hilton.

The new owners, the Ricketts family, plus Lou Piniella and his coaching staff also will attend the three-day event.

Dawson, elected into Cooperstown on Wednesday, will be joined by Hall of Famers Ernie Banks, Billy Williams, Fergie Jenkins and Ryne Sandberg.

Besides Byrd, the Cubs players currently on the roster scheduled to attend include Carlos Zambrano, Ryan Dempster, Ted Lilly, Carlos Marmol, Derrek Lee, Ryan Theriot, Mike Fontenot, Jeff Baker, and Geovany Soto. Others expected to attend include John Grabow, Tom Gorzelanny, Justin Berg, Jim Adduci, Esmailin Caridad, Andrew Cashner, Welington Castillo, Tyler Colvin, Sam Fuld, Jeff Gray, Angel Guzman, Koyie Hill, Micah Hoffpauir, Brett Jackson, Sean Marshall, Jeff Samardzija, Carlos Silva, and Randy Wells.

Former Cubs Glenn Beckert, Jody Davis, Bob Dernier, Randy Hundley, Jay Johnstone, Gary Matthews, Keith Moreland, Andy Pafko, Milt Pappas, Scott Sanderson, Lee Smith, Tim Stoddard, Rick Sutcliffe, and Steve Trout also are scheduled to take part.

General manager Jim Hendry and his staff plus broadcasters Ron Santo, Pat Hughes, Len Kasper, and Bob Brenly also will be at the convention, which is sold out.

I hope people boo hendry out the door next weekend since he seems in no hurry to improve this team. I would not spend two cents on that convention until the front office shows they are trying to put a winning team on the field.

The conventions proceeds go to charity….

Burn!

I agree with tonys28 regardless of wacky17 “reminding” us to be charitable. Just because some of us are SO FED UP with the way Hendry has performed his job and would like to make a statement by boycotting the convention or hoping that Hendry gets his well deserved round of boos does not mean we are not charitable. In fact, if wacky17 can provide the list of charites the convention “proceeds” go to I’m sure a lot of us would be happy to directly give to those charites circumventing any chance at all of the money (even one penny) going to pay for ANYTHING Hendry has his hands in. Yeah, I can see being that upset with Hendry.
Even giving Hendry the benfit of the doubt and assuming HE thinks he’s improving the team and spending THE ORGANIZATION’S MONEY WISELY the fact remains he is doing just the opposite. After reading in today’s Trib that the St. Louis GM managed to sign Holliday for the 2010 season and beyond, and admitting that a seven year contract is an excessive term, he has managed to sign a younger player in his prime for one year less than Hendry signed Soriano and the 2010 payroll for his team to beat in 2010 is about 30 to 40 million less than Hendry’s “team that should have been”. If you’r going to spend millions and dish out long term contracts at least do it with players of Holliday’s caliber not to mention Pujols’ (if and when the time comes). But to do it with Soriano, Fukodome, Bradley and Byrd just dosen’t add up to good general managing.

IM UPSET AT THE PEORIA LIST OF PLAYERS. EVERY YEAR WE GET AN OK PITCHER AND NONE OF THE BIG HITTERS. WE GET CHEATED EVERY YEAR.
ALSO WE HAVE A CUBS MINOR LEAGUE BALL PARK AND HAVE ALOT OF FANS AROUND HERE. BUT YET WE STILL GET ROBBED.
STARTING NEXT YEAR I SAY IF WE DONT GET ANY BIG HITTERS WE SHOULD BOYCOT THE CARAVAN.

I JUST WANTED TO SAY THAT PEORIA GETS ROBBED EVERY YEAR. WE DONT GET THE BIG STARS EVER. WELLS IS OK BUT WHERE IS OUR BIG HITTER. NEVER DO WE GET ANYBODY OF GREAT CALABER. BULL IS WHAT THIS IS. IM NOT GOING NEXT YEAR UNLESS WE GET SOME STARS. IM STARTING THE BOYCOT OF PEORIA CUBS CONVETION WITH OUT A SUPER STAR OR TWO. !!!

Thomas quit complaining at least you get something in springfield the cubs havent had there winter caravan since 93…. that thing they are bringing is for kids only if you are not a kid you are not allowed there

The list of people going to Springfield/Peoria on Jan. 14 include new hitting coach Rudy Jaramillo and players Koyie Hill, Micah Hoffpauir, Randy Wells, Justin Berg, Andres Blanco, Jim Adduci, and Andrew Cashner. Those are all quality people — and the type of ballplayers I’d want kids to meet.

Honestly, I really hope Jim Hendry or any member of the organization wouldn’t be booed out of the room. At this point, the core of the team is established. It is what it is. Moves will be made again for better or for worse. I don’t know anyone other than the opposition that wasn’t frustrated with the Cubs in 2009. However, it’s too late for 2009, and you can’t try to win yesterday at this point. The team was successful in ’07 and ’08 after turning it around from a terrible ’06. They do have the people that can take it all the way. It goes without saying, but yeah, they have to perform like a championship team; they have the ability. If the fans don’t get behind the team at some point, it will just make it even tougher for the players to go out and play. I would hope the convention would turn out to be the type of event that would be a great launching pad to get the team amped up for a successful 2010 campaign. It’s time to rally behind the organization!

Regarding the convention and the purchasing of items, is it cash only or are debit/credit cards accepted?

If only we knew earlier johnnyparkside that all it took was for us fans to get behind the team (which we haven’t been???) and then we would see how much easier the players would have it, allowing Soriano to blossum into a stellar defensive leftfielder, Fukodome to stop corkscrewing his at bats, Gregg to stop giving up homeruns, Miles to…to…to, uh well forget Miles, Bradley would have remembererd how many outs there were in an inning, Soto would have given up weed and excessive eating…..sigh, it’s all our fault. How will we ever make it up to them? Let’s form a Malron Byrd fan club right now before it’s too late for him!

>> It’s time to rally behind the organization!

No, that’s got to stop once and for all. The problem has always been that we’ve rallied behind the organization, which has allowed the organization to take advantage of us by feeling that they don’t need to take the necessary steps to provide a championship caliber team because we’d support them anyway. The new reality is that the old way of the Cub organization doing business won’t cut it anymore. It’s time that they do the right things.

muskatt where did I say I was upset about who is going to be in Springfield what ticks me off is it for school age children only….if you are not a child you are not allowed there it was that way last year and it is this way this year…they have not had the cubs convention in springfield since 03…the only reason I remember it is there was some old guy there cussing larry himes up one side and down the other for letting Greg Maddux and Andre Dawson walk

my comment re: the players was in response to Thomas, who said he was upset by the list of names going to Peoria. As for cash/credit, I’d be prepared with both — although am not sure what you’re buying. There are ATMs in the Chicago Hilton

MADDUX NAMED ASSISTANT TO HENDRY?!?!?!!!!!!!!!!!!
Let the countdown begin!!!! How many seasons until he BECOMES the GM? Along with Sandberg as field manager?!!!
Forget Obama….Hope and Change are coming to the Cubs!
Now, if somebody can just pack Hendry’s bags while somebody else gets the door….

Hah, how can this become such a heated topic? Keep the charitable events coming! Cubs win, Cubs win!
