3/4 Play ball
There have been no questions about it now being 102 years since the Cubs won a World Series and no controversy this spring.
“It’s gone very smooth,” Lou Piniella said Thursday. “We’ve stressed to these kids having fun and working hard and they have, to their credit. It’s been a nice camp, very uneventful which we like. I don’t think I’ve ever had a camp where a week or so before the regular squad is supposed to report, everybody’s here. We’ll see if that bodes well or not.”
What are Piniella’s expectations?
“I expect us to play well,” he said. “I’ve told the team that. We’re going to have a nice ballclub here — it’s just a question of sorting it out. I’m not all that concerned about wins and losses here early in spring. Our job is to see as many people as we can and start making evaluations on who can help us.”
There are two openings in the rotation, two in the bullpen and two on the bench.
“These Spring Training games will dictate what happens,” he said.
