3/6 Cubs still on lookout for 'pen help
Losing Angel Guzman for the start of the season creates another opening in the Cubs bullpen. It doesn’t change GM Jim Hendry’s approach. He’s already been on the lookout for an experienced right-handed pitcher.
“It’s been well documented that from [the Winter Meetings] on we’ve talked about adding one more piece,” Hendry said Saturday. “That was the same plan before this.”
Guzman has a tear in his right shoulder and was considering whether to have surgery or try a more conservative approach.
“First of all, you have to see how guys here in camp pitch,” Hendry said. “We’ve got seven or eight guys who we think can be in the rotation in the five spot. Those people who don’t break in the rotation are capable of going to the pen.”
Carlos Silva, Jeff Samardzija, Tom Gorzelanny and Sean Marshall all are vying for the two rotation spots. That means the other two could end up in the bullpen.
“We have some good young arms here,” Lou Piniella said, “but inexperienced.”
