4/10 Masterful Fuke

Kosuke Fukudome posted a .327 average last April, and was batting .313 so far after hitting his first homer on Saturday.

“He’s a Masters player,” Lou Piniella said. “That’s when they play the Masters — in April, right?”

This spring, Piniella predicted great things for the Japanese outfielder this season. He repeated that on Saturday.

“This is the year I feel he’ll break out and have a nice solid offensive year,” Piniella said. “We know he can play defense.”

Told Piniella’s comments, Fukudome smiled.

“I’m glad to hear that,” he said, “but I don’t want to finish that way just in April.”

I think its fair to criticize Kosuke, but he hasn’t been as bad as many of the fans are making him out to be. For one, his defense has been nothing short of outstanding, and last season he had an .OBP of .375, which is certainly strong. If he can get his AVG to .280 or .290, he’ll easily be a .400 OBP guy, and 100 runs if he gets enough playing time. I’m a fan of Fuku and am really pulling for him to have a big year.

Matt, I agree, my only beef with Fukodome is that he frustrates with his hot and cold run producing offense and of course is signature corkscrew batting style, still he is not THE problem. If we were not stuck with Soriano in left field and had a legit “monster” RBI guy on this team instead, Fukodome would be a much more understood acquistion but Hendry played Dr. Frankenstein but never did produce that “monster” RBI guy for any outfield postion, instead over the last few years he created a rather weak run-producing outfield leaving the burden to Ramirez and Lee.
Not good.
