4/22 Ramirez to get day off

Expect Aramis Ramirez to be sitting on Thursday in the Cubs’ series finale against the Mets. After Wednesday’s game, Lou Piniella said he was going to give his third baseman a chance to regroup. Ramirez was batting .131 and is in an 0-for-17 skid. He leads the team in strikeouts, too.

“We’re going to give Ramirez a day off and let him work on some things and see if we can get him going,” Piniella said.

On Tuesday, Ramirez admitted he wasn’t right at the plate.

“I’m not seeing the ball good right now,” Ramirez said.

I hate to see Ramirez go through such a horrendous slump as he has always been a great, selective, clutch RBI guy.
Plus his defense has been nothing short of excellent so when we sit him we also lose his glove unlike when Soriano sits I kind of look forward to seeing some good defense in left field. Tracy should do a pretty good job at third and maybe this is a sign of things to come, an occassional day off for A-Ram to keep him rested and an occassional start for Tracy to keep him sharp.

Pat Hughes had a great comment that Ramirez is “too talented” to remain in this funk for long. If the Cubs can keep from slipping too far while we fix our ‘pen and get Aramis hitting again, I think we’re going to see an impressive team that dominates for the majority of the season. I’m predicting 151-9, but that could just be my Cub-optimism talking.
