4/29 About last night …

The Cubs trailed 3-2 on Wednesday when Marlon Byrd doubled to lead off the eighth inning. Mike Fontenot was up next and popped up to Nationals shortstop Ian Desmond. After the game, Lou Piniella became a little testy with a reporter who asked if Fontenot should’ve bunted. What did Fontenot think?

“Whatever he wanted me to do, I’d do,” said Fontenot, who obviously wasn’t bunting. “I should’ve been able to get the job done swinging the bat. That’s part of the game. When there’s a guy on second, nobody out, the pitcher knows — everybody knows — you’re trying to pull the ball.

“Usually they try to keep it away — he actually wasn’t trying to keep it away,” Fontenot said. “He threw a few pitches and I had really good swings and fouled them off. I had a good swing on the last one and the ball just went the wrong way on me.”

The Cubs stranded 11 in the loss, so it wasn’t just Fontenot who failed to deliver with men on.

“We had opportunities,” Fontenot said. “Myself, I had opportunities a couple times and I didn’t get it done. As a team we didn’t get it done yesterday and that’s what it comes down to. After the fact, there’s always things you can say, like ‘I could’ve done this.’ Long story short, swinging the bat, I should’ve gotten it done.”

Lou manages as if it he were in the American League, his history is just about all American League, not an excuse but possibly a reason. Hendry? He general manages as if he were in the American League (how I wish HE WAS!!) but the reason??? Who knows…maybe he got a hold of Soto’s stash??? Because it doesn’t seem like Soto is smoking anymore. I don’t understand why any of us fans would have high expectations, sure the starting pitching is GOOD but that’s about all this team has going for it. Certainly a lack of athleticism, youth, and defensive skills. Until both Hendry and Lou along with their AL brains are gone this *&^%$ will continue.

I’ve seen two games this year where the Cubs are down a run or tied & Byrd leads off with a double & sits at 2nd base for the inning. Lou got testy when he was asked about Fontenot not bunting & his comment “what kind of baseball are you playing?” was idiotic. Maybe Lou should try something diferent once in awhile instead of the same old same old. He might just be too old school to help the Cubs win like they’re capable. To me Fontenot being lefthanded puts a bunt on the 3rd base or 1st base side & advances Bryd makes more sense then him being stranded at 2nd for 3 outs.

Amen Dabrosis. Lou has to know his team, when they are struggling to DRIVE IN RUNS (like he thought Fontenot should have done) and when they need to create a run (sacrificing the TYING run to third for example). He is somewhat handicapped by the players Hendry saddled him with but still, they are who they are and he needs to know their capabilities (or lack of). A lot of close games so far, it sure would have been nice to have Fuld available to either pinch run, bunt or play defense instead of watching the American League DH Nady with his noodle of an arm either sitting on the bench not contributing or getting a rare at bat hoping for a homerun. Hendry, what are you doing???
