5/2 Gorzelanny's 10 K day

Tom Gorzelanny set a career high with 10 strikeouts Sunday vs. the D-backs, What was impressive was the lefty’s ability to locate his fastball.

“I was struggling late in an at-bat when I would get in a strikeout situation elevating the fastball,” Gorzelanny said of past starts. “I’d almost put it over the screen every time when I tried to elevate it. Today, I was able to put it exactly where [Geovany Soto] wanted it.

“We were able to mix pitches and kind of keep guys off balance,” Gorzelanny said. “I couldn’t really tell you if there was one pitch more effective than any other. It was just being able to throw each pitch in a spot where I wanted it.”

Soto saw improvement.

“Changing the eye level is real important for him,” Soto said. “Today, you saw it. He threw fastballs away, changeup coming in, moving the guys’ feet, elevating the ball, he did it all today.”

Gorzelanny has thrown at least seven innings in back to back starts for the first time since Aug. 7-12, 2007, while with Pittsburgh. He also helped with the offense, hitting a single in the second. It was his first hit since Aug. 15, 2009, a span of 14 at-bats.

“He pitched a great ballgame,” Soto said. “He did everything I asked for and more.”

I would be remiss if I didn’t give Hendry credit for acquiring Gorzelany (and Grabow, I guess) for what he gave up. That was a nice move and is reminiscent of the days gone by when he actually tried instead of just writing checks. Maybe this season he will learn to revert to his old self??
