5/23 Zambrano update

Carlos Zambrano will throw a simulated game on Monday at Wrigley Field in his preparation for his return to the Cubs rotation. Zambrano was to throw 65-70 pitches, but he won’t be ready to get back in the rotation five days after that. That means he’ll miss the Cardinals series May 28-30 at Wrigley.

Lou Piniella said after Sunday’s game that Zambrano will not make his return until the team’s next road trip, which begins May 31 in Pittsburgh.

“We’ll start him off on the road,” Piniella said.

Zambrano was 1-2 with a 7.45 ERA in four starts, and is 0-1 with a 4.76 ERA in 11 relief appearances.

Carrie, who do think will be bumped from the already good rotation once Zambrano is re-inserted? Or do you think there will be a traded surplus starting pitcher for some relief help not named Bob Howry? Isn’t this Lilly’s last year of his contract making him a candidate for a trade to a contender? Getting young talent back from a contending team for a veteran pitcher in his last year would actually be a good move by a good GM. I’ve still got my doubts about Hendry pulling something like that off but you never know…
