6/15 Checking the standings

Tuesday is Game No. 64 for the Cubs and they enter play 7 1/2 games back in the Central Division at 28-35. It’s the biggest gap Lou Piniella has had at this mark since joining the Cubs. In 2007, the team was 29-35 after 64 games and 5 1/2 games back but finished June 17-11 and then went 17-9 in July en route to a 85-77 record and the division title.

In 2008, the Cubs were 40-24 after 64 games and had a 2 1/2 game lead. They finished with the best record in the National League at 97-64 and won the division again.

In 2009, the Cubs were 33-31 after 64 games and 2 1/2 games back. They did go 18-9 in July and finished with a winning record at 83-78 but ended up 7 1/2 games back at the end of the year.
