6/16 Lefty, righty matchups & Colvin
The Cubs faced lefty Gio Gonzalez on Wednesday and will have to deal with another southpaw, Oakland’s Dallas Braden, on Thursday. Plus, the Angels are expected to start two lefties this weekend in Scott Kazmir and Joe Saunders. If one went with a straight left-right platoon, that would mean left-handed hitting Cubs outfielder Tyler Colvin will spend a lot of time on the bench. But look at the numbers. Left-handed hitters are actually doing better than right-handers against Kazmir and Saunders. Lefties are hitting .420 off Kazmir compared to .225 by right-handers, while lefties are batting .314 off Saunders compared to .265 by righties.
As for Braden, right-handers are hitting .261 while lefties are hitting .253 off him, so it’s a push. But Lou Piniella has said he wants Colvin to get more playing time, including at-bats vs. left-handers.
