6/18 Extra bases

The Cubs’ comeback fell short Friday. They did rally for four runs in the ninth, but lost 7-6 to the Angels because of three errors. All three led to runs and of the Angels’ total seven runs, only three were earned.

Third baseman Jeff Baker made two of the miscues on back to back throws.

“I just didn’t make a good enough throw,” Baker said.

The Angels are a good example of a team that puts an emphasis on pitching and defense.

“That’s their gig and we knew that going into it,” Baker said. “It’s not like we weren’t prepared. We just didn’t make plays and didn’t execute.”

* Carlos Silva did post his 10th quality start. He now has lost back to back games for the first time since Aug. 8-15, 2008. He has a 2.07 ERA when he throws six or more innings. Silva left Friday’s game because of cramps in his leg.

* Derrek Lee had his first multi-homer game, and 23rd of his career. He hit two solo shots.

* Tyler Colvin hit his first three-run homer, and notched his ninth multi-hit game. He’s batting .353 at Wrigley so far.

* Baker is the sixth Cubs player to record multiple errors in a single inning (Lee and Colvin did so on Tuesday vs. Oakland). It’s the first time in his career he’s done that.

Another player who “just” didn’t do what he is paid to do.

Please remind me exactly what Baker brings to the team…?

All season we have had a competent – hitting .270 – and defensively good 3rd baseman waiting in the wings. In his one at bat yesterday he drew a walk.

Why has Lounatic Piniella looked everywhere else first?

Why bring back Homerun Howry?

Why bring on Grabow, when there was still hope?

Tom Ricketts needs to get A GRIP NOW… yesterday this team reached new lows in throwing away a game there for the taking.

Could Cashner or Marshall not pitched 2 innings in 7th-8th?

Ricketts do your stuff before your investment is worth zip.
