7/3 Extra bases & Soto
Geovany Soto notched his first multi-RBI game since June 9 with a two-run double in the sixth of the Cubs’ 3-1 win over the Reds. Soto had missed chances — along with his teammates — earlier in the game. He came up in the second with a runner at second, and in the third with the bases loaded. There were two on in the fifth in his third at-bat.
“Every time you get guys in scoring position, you try your best to get them in,” Soto said. “Everytime you don’t do it, it’s like, ‘Here we go again.’ Trust me, we’re doing our best out there. Sometimes that’s the way it goes. Luckily, today was a good day for us.”
Soto now is 2-for-4 with the bases loaded this season.
Some encouraging signs:
* Derrek Lee ended a 0-for-13 skid with a double in the first.
* Starlin Castro drew a career-high three walks. He also had a single.
* Mike Fontenot has hit safely in his last five home games and is leading the team with a .333 average at Wrigley.
* Marlon Byrd collected his 31st multi-hit game and first since June 23. Sixteen of those multi-hit games have come at Wrigley. He had 39 multi-hit games in all of 2009 with Texas.
