7/20 No. 1 pick sidelined
Hayden Simpson, the Cubs’ No. 1 Draft pick, will not play baseball this summer because he’s battling mononucleosis, according to scouting director Tim Wilken, who was in Boise. Simpson, the 16th selection overall out of Southern Arkansas, was 13-1 with a 1.81 ERA in 99 1/3 innings this spring. The Cubs had hoped to have Simpson go to Mesa, Ariz., after he signed and then report to Boise.
“Maybe this is a blessing in disguise,” Wilken told reporters in Boise on Monday night. “Not for Boise and not for the selfish Tim Wilken, who wants to see him in a game.”
