8/3 Byrd is the word
Marlon Byrd has made one great catch after another in center field this season for the Cubs. On Tuesday night, he robbed the Brewers’ Casey McGehee in the seventh and then dove for another great catch of Alcides Escobar’s ball leading off the eighth. As Byrd says, the defense should never slump.
He’s a good mentor for the Cubs rookies.
“That was the culture I helped start in Texas, especially with the young guys — we had a lot of young guys last year,” Byrd said. “They see veteran guys slacking out there, they think they can do it. Anytime they go a little slower than they should have, we have to say something. We have to set a standard for the young guys. The big thing is passing the torch, and you can’t do that if you’re not playing right.”
The Brewers wouldn’t mind if Byrd took a day off against them.
“There are a lot of guys in here talking about him,” McGehee said. “He goes and gets it just as well as anybody. He’s like a free safety out there. You have to work to get one away from him. I was getting tired of seeing that.”
