8/8 Minor matters

Darwin Barney had three hits and two RBIs to help Iowa beat Tacoma, 7-3. With the win, the Iowa Cubs expanded their lead in the Northern Division to 4 1/2 games. Austin Bibens-Dirkx gave up three runs on five hits over six innings, striking out five. He’s 4-0 with a 2.52 ERA. Micah Hoffpauir extended his hitting streak to 16 games and is batting .379 in that stretch.

Chris Carpenter threw six shutout innings in Tennessee’s 9-2 win over Huntsville. He struck out eight and gave up three hits, walking two. Tony Campana had two hits and one RBI and Tony Thomas and Carpenter each drove in two runs.

Mark Reed hit his second homer but it wasn’t enough as Jupiter rallied to beat Daytona, 4-2. DJ LeMahieu extended his hitting streak to 10 games with two hits and was batting .419 in that stretch. Brooks Raley did not get a decision, but gave up one run on five hits over 6 2/3 innings.

Newly acquired Brett Wallach gave up seven runs — four earned — on three hits and four walks over 3 1/3 innings in Peoria’s 9-8 loss to Quad Cities. Wallach was one of two Minor League pitchers the Cubs acquired from the Dodgers in the Ted Lilly-Ryan Theriot-Blake DeWitt deal. Jae-Hoon Ha and Mario Mercedes each had two hits and two RBIs.

Boise forfeited its game against Everett. The game was delayed 80 minutes at the beginning and the Hawks were trailing 2-0 after one inning. Boise manager Jody Davis met with home plate umpire Matt Mullins and after a long discussion, pulled his players off the field. Professional baseball rules declare a 9-0 win for the winner in the event of a forfeit.

Dallas Beeler gave up one run on three hits over three innings in Mesa’s 2-1 loss to the Brewers. Pin-Chieh Chen had two hits and Tzu-An Wang threw two scoreless innings of relief.
