8/10 Cubs rookies
When Marcos Mateo appeared in Monday’s game, he became the 11th Cubs rookie pitcher this year. That’s the most in franchise history for a single season. The previous high was 10 set in 1958 and 1962.
Chicago’s 11 rookie pitchers lead Major League Baseball as well. In 2009, the Padres and Angels used 14 and 12, respectively, by Aug. 9.
* Entering Tuesday’s game, 13 rookies have appeared in a game for the Cubs, and if Welington Castillo gets into a game, he’ll be No. 14. The Cubs are one of three teams to use 13 or more, joining the Tigers (15) and Marlins (13).
* Starlin Castro is third among National League rookies with a .308 average. The Astros’ Chris Johnson leads the pack at .356, and the Giants’ Buster Posey is second at .339.
* Tyler Colvin leads all ML rookies with 17 home runs. The Mets’ Ike Davis is second with 15. Colvin also ranks second among NL rookies in OPS at .830.
