8/18 Demp: Let's cheer for D-Lee

There’s one more thing Ryan Dempster wants Cubs fans to do on Friday when the team opens a three-game series against the Braves: Cheer for Derrek Lee.

“There hasn’t been a lot to cheer about,” Dempster said, “but if
there’s something to cheer about it will be Friday when Derrek Lee
takes his first at-bat. I hope everybody in the stadium gives him a
standing ovation for everything he’s given in the past seven years he’s
been here. He deserves that at the very least.”

That will be Lee’s first game in a Braves uniform. He was traded to the NL East leaders on Wednesday for two Minor League pitchers. It’s been tough to cheer this month. The Cubs are 4-13 in August after losing 5-1 on Wednesday to the Padres. The crowd of 33,267 at Wrigley was the lowest of the season, and smallest since April 16, 2007, when the Cubs drew 32,126. Four rookies started and six rookie pitchers appeared in the game, the first time in Major League history a team has used a half dozen prior to September call-ups.

“I think a lot of the fan base understands we have to find out about the people we have before we move forward,” GM Jim Hendry said.

Micah Hoffpauir will join the team Thursday from Triple-A Iowa. Expect more young players, even before the Sept. 1 call-up date. Lee appreciated his time in Chicago.

“I grew as a player, grew as a person,” Lee said. “I didn’t achieve the ultimate goal. Coming in here, it just seemed like we were going to win a championship so that part is disappointing. The rest of my experience is nothing but positive. My family enjoyed it here, Wrigley Field was great. It was just a great experience.”

Why don’t we call up Hak Ju Lee? Castro can play second base while Lee plays short or visa-versa. The kid steals 30 bases, which is sorely needed on this slow Cubs team.

hoffpauir playing tonight, he is not coming up, leadoff position has been a revolving door, i would guess fuld coming up, he is the only true leadoff guy in the whole system

“I think a lot of the fan base understands we have to find out about the people we have before we move forward,” GM Jim Hendry said…..IS HE KIDDING?? What else does the lame duck manager or the daffy duck general manager need to find out about Fukdome, Soriano, Baker, Hill??? Yet they keep getting playing time while Colvin and Castillo sit?? Hendry is a walking contradiction, what he says and what he does are both just mind warping. Hell, they should be sitting Soriano to find out what the next outfield prospect has, probably a glove at least. What better time than now? Are they both hoping for Soriano to hit another 15 homers before the season ends to help us finish IN FOURTH FRIGGIN’ PLACE?!?!?!?!???? In the awesome words of Ron Santo: C’MON!!! Baker in right field over Colvin?? Huh?

Jim Henry and the Cubs are a bunch of Dumb ***** to let a Golden Glove First baseman like D Lee go..WOW only the Cubs…Ricketts family has dismantled this team but in the wrong players…Get rid of Jim Henry,Zman, soriano….D Lee you will be missed and not sure if I will follow the Cubs after 30yrs as a fan they are destroying it…Lee I will be pulling for the Braves when you come to Play….

On what basis are you lunatics berating letting go of Lee?

I am the last person to champion the loon that is Hendry, but we are going nowhere this year and were never going to offer Lee arbitration based on this years figures – as even for a $2m discount he was not value for next year.
So we have freed up a little salary so Fukupdome can be packaged out this winter – or hopefully sooner given that he is now featuring every day.

The prospects we got in return are passable if not the AAA starter which would have been nice – but was always unlikely.

So feel free to berate, abuse and ridicule Jim and his GM inadequacies – but make sure your argument carries substance or you will look the fools yourself.

And as for the regular Soriano rants, we are unfortunately stuck with him and his astronomical contract… live with it!

I agree with hustlelikereed, this is one of the rare good moves by Hendry even if the 3 kids received don’t pan out, just saving almost 2 million made sense. Of course when I say a good move by Hendry it is also a standard, by the book move any GM would have made and did not take any extraordinary shrewdness on Hendry’s part. However, regarding Soriano, I will always hold out that he may yet not be a Cub for the entire balance of his contract. Bradley was moved, that alone means it is at least a remote possiblity the same can be done with Soriano. Especially if his pride emerges as he gets older and he would actually WANT to finish his career as a DH, thereby reducing his embarrassing fielding. So although I must live with Soriano in left field I will relentlessly remind anybody what a bad job Hendry did by acquiring him. 8 years is a long time, long enough for people to forget that Hendry was the culprit. It should be our mission to…NEVER LET THE WORLD FORGET.
