8/31 Cubs call-ups

The Cubs were not expected to callup any players on Wednesday when Major League rosters can expand but they do have a catcher in waiting. Welington Castillo, who had been with the Triple-A Iowa team, was in Chicago in case he was needed. Cubs catcher Geovany Soto has some swelling in his right knee and the Cubs wanted a backup just in case he was unavailable for an extended period of time.

Because Castillo was with the Cubs until Aug. 22, he is not eligible to be added to the team until Thursday, 10 days after being sent down. However, if Soto had to go on the disabled list, the Cubs could activate Castillo immediately. The Iowa team has a half game lead in the Pacific Coast League Northern Division and there isn’t a need for more players other than another catcher on the big league team.

The Cubs were expected to add six or seven players once the Iowa team is finished in the playoffs. Among the candidates are pitchers Justin Berg, Jeff Stevens, Mitch Atkins, and Jeff Samardzija, and outfielders Sam Fuld and Brad Snyder.

ARE THESE CALL-UPS THE BEST THAT THE MINOR HAS.I DONOT THINK SO THERE ARE AT LEASE FOUR OTHER PITCHER THA HAS A BETTER RECORD AND STUFF THAN BERG,STEVENS,OR ATKINS THER IS AT LEASE TWO CENTERFIELDER THAT BETTER THAN FUID WE DO NEED TO KNOW WHAT SNYDER CAN DO AS A EVERY DAY PLAYER THE BIG CLUB HAS TO MANY ONE WAY PLAYER WHY ADD ANOTHER WITH FUID THE WE NEED SOMEONE WHO CAN GET THE JOB DONE AT THE PLATE AND IN THE FIELD SO LOOK BEON 3A TO 2A EVEN DOWN TO 1A BALL FOR THESE PLAYERS TRUST THE FARM HANDS NO MORE FREE AGENTS SIGNING

roman, one would think that Fuld is being brought up as a backup outfielder/pinch runner and not to start in order to see “what he has”. Brad Snyder on the other hand should be called up and start every remaining game in either left or centerfield (if he can handle the defense) with Byrd and Colvin rounding out the starting outfield for the reamainder of the season as Snyder may be a key figure in 2011. If there is another outfeilder that has merit in starting then put him out there too and THEN move Colvin to 1B for his on the job training. This should be done as we ALL know what Soriano, Nady and Fukodome bring to the game…eroding skills. Since Hendry could not find takers for Moe, Larry or Curly, all 3 should sit the bench in order to find out more about the so-called improved minor league system. Time for Hendry to put up or shut up regarding all his statements about having pieces in place and only needing a few added pieces in order to turn the team around. Where are these few added pieces coming from? Maybe the farm system so let’s see what they got. Right?
