9/1 Cubs callups – or lack of
The Cubs did not call anyone up on Wednesday when Major League rosters can expand. They will be adding a pitcher soon when Carlos Silva finishes his rehab work. Silva was to start for Class A Peoria on Wednesday and throw about 70 pitches. He’s coming back following a procedure on his heart to correct an abnormal heart rate.
“We’d love to get him back,” Cubs manager Mike Quade said of Silva.
The Cubs will add catcher Welington Castillo on Friday.
“I’m happy with the roster here,” Quade said. “We’ve got Castillo in the wings and that’s a good thing. The third catcher is first and foremost. I haven’t asked for anybody. I do think it’s a
different deal when you’re a game behind a first-place club. For now, I’ve asked for nothing. Let the people in charge assess that.”
The Cubs were expected to add a few more players once Triple-A Iowa’s season is over. They are competing for a playoff spot. Quade could not confirm whether Jeff Samardzija would be added or not. With Silva returning, the Cubs will have six starters.
