9/7 Minor matters

Jason Dubois hit two homers and Jay Jackson gave up four runs on seven hits over six innings but it wasn’t enough as Iowa lost to Memphis, 7-6, on Monday. Both Iowa and Memphis finished tied for the PCL’s best record at 82-62 but the Redbirds earned the playoff berth because they had a better record against Northern Division foes than Iowa did (Memphis 24-24; Iowa 20-28). The first tiebreaker is head to head, and Iowa and Memphis split their 16 games this season.

“It’s heartbreaking not to be going to the playoffs,” said Dubois, who was named the PCL Player of the Week on Tuesday. He hit .529 with four doubles, a triple, six home runs and 18 RBIs. In 72 games with Iowa, Dubois batted .300.

The Iowa Cubs held or shared the division lead for the final 50 days of the season. Manager Ryne Sandberg was asked if he’ll be back next season with the Triple-A team.

“I’m not sure what happens next year,” Sandberg said. “But I’ll tell you this, I’ve had a good experience here and it’s been a fun summer for me.”

* Iowa infielder Marquez Smith was named Topps Player of the Month for August.  During the month, Smith played in 27 games and hit .363 (37-for-102). He drove in 28 runs, had seven doubles, 12 home runs and one stolen base. His .363 average was 10th-best in the PCL.

* Craig Muschko gave up one run on five hits over five innings in Tennessee’s 3-2 win over Carolina in the regular season finale. The win gave the Smokies the best record in franchise history at 86-53. Tennessee will begin the North Division Championship Series on Thursday against West Tenn. Brandon Guyer homered Monday and Brett Jackson had two hits.

* Daytona’s season ended Sept. 5 at 75-64 overall, including a 41-28 record in the second half.

* Robinson Lopez threw three scoreless inings in Peoria’s 9-4 win over Quad Cities in the regular season finale. Yohan Gonzalez picked up the win in relief.
