9/8 Extra bases

Randy Wells is 1-6 with a 5.85 ERA in his last nine starts dating to July 28. Opponents are batting .282 against him in that stretch. Ouch. Wells’ next start will be Tuesday in St. Louis, his first career start at Busch Stadium, old or new. A St. Louis area native, this will be big.

* Geovany Soto drew his 59th walk in the fifth. He’s three shy of matching his career high of 62.

* Tyler Colvin doubled in the seventh for his 42nd extra-base hit. The Cubs have had at least one extra-base hit in 31 consecutive games, dating to Aug. 7. The longest streak this year was 39 games May 6-June 18.

* The Cubs are 9-6 under Mike Quade, who won two of three series in his first homestand.

“I’ve talked about the process and I’m happy with a lot of that,” Quade said. “I really wanted to win today. I want to win every day but [Brett Myers] has been so tough and I thought it was an excellent challenge.”

Quade admitted to having more fun at home.

“I’m more comfortable in my surroundings here, that’s for sure,” he said.

Randy Wells pitched well early in the season but has really struggled and hasn’t had a quality start in quite some time. Maybe it’s time to move him to the bullpen and give someone else a chance. Jeff Samardzja wants a shot to prove that he is worthy and Randy Wells has some work to do to set himself right. Another option for Mike Quade might be to bring Sean Marshall back into the starting rotation. Marshall has performed well in the set up role so Quade may be hesitant to make such a move. Sean Marshall has worked hard and deserves the opportunity.
