9/12 Extra bases

The Cubs have shutout the Brewers in back to back games for the first time in franchise history. That’s a span of 484 games, and includes the Milwaukee Braves and Brewers teams (both American League and National League versions). The Cubs and Brewers have played 198 games since Milwaukee rejoined the NL in 1998.

* Ryan Dempster now is 15-3 against the Brewers after Saturday’s win. That’s an .833 winning percentage, the highest for any pitcher against the Brewers who has at least 15 decisions against them, according to Elias Sports Bureau. Eleven of Dempster’s wins over the Brewers have come since 2008, which is the most for any pitcher against any team over that span. Honorable mention goes to Jon Lester, who has 10 wins over the Orioles since 2008. Dempster’s career record now is 100-100. Only one ctive pitcher was 100-100 in his first 200 games and that was Javier Vazquez.

* Carlos Marmol notched his 30th save Saturday night. He’s the 10th Cubs pitcher to reach that mark and first since Kerry Wood saved 34 games in 2008.

* Marlon Byrd collected his 900th career hit and also No. 156 of the season. His previous single-season high was 155, set last season with the Rangers. Byrd is batting .371 against lefties. In the last 35 years, the only Cubs players with a better mark against left-hnders was Bill Buckner, who hit .389 in 1978 and Jose Cardinal, who hit .379 in 1975.

* Looking ahead to the St. Louis series, the Cubs will start Carlos Silva on Monday vs. lefty Jaime Garcia; Randy Wells on Tuesday vs. Adam Wainwright; and Carlos Zambrano on Wednesday vs. Chris Carpenter.
