9/12 McNutt stars in Cubs system

Trey McNutt came through for Double-A Tennessee Saturday night in Game 3 of the best-of-five Southern League playoffs. McNutt gave up one run on four hits over five innings in the Smokies’ 9-2 win. It was only his fourth start for the Double-A team. He began the year at Class A Peoria and was 6-0 with a 1.51 ERA in 13 games. Moved up to high Class A Daytona, he went 4-0 with a 2.63 ERA in nine games. In four starts with the Smokies in the regular season, McNutt was 0-1 with a 5.74 ERA. He gave up five runs over 4 2/3 innings in his first start with the Smokies. For the season, the right-hander, who was a 32nd round pick in 2009, finished with a 2.48 ERA combined for the season.

The Smokies lead the best-of-five series 2-1, and meet Sunday.
