9/12 Silva scratched; Samardzija to start

Carlos Silva was scratched from Monday’s scheduled start against the Cardinals because of a right elbow strain and Jeff Samardzija will make his first big league start of the season in his place. Silva (10-6, 4.22 ERA) reported the soreness during batting practice on Sunday. He was to return to Chicago to be examined by the Cubs orthopedic specialist, Dr. Stephen Gryzlo.

Samardzija (0-1, 18.90 ERA) was penciled in for next Saturday against the Marlins. He began this season with the Cubs but was then sent down to Triple-A Iowa after four outings. In 35 games with Iowa, including 15 starts, he was 11-3 with a 4.37 ERA.

“It sounds good, I’m ready to go and my arm feels good,” Samardzija said Sunday.

He has not thrown in a game since he was called up from Iowa last Tuesday.

“I’ll just get out there and just really attack,” Samardzija said. “I don’t think there’s anything to change or anything to look at.”

He did make two starts last season with the Cubs among the 20 games he appeared in, and gave up 10 earned runs in 8 1/3 innings in those games. Samardzija has been looking forward to getting another chance.

“It’s definitely been something that’s been on my mind for a long time,” Samardzija said. “They use the term, ‘You get hungry,’ or whatever, whatever you want to say. When you spend the whole year down there in Triple-A, this is definitely something you look forward to and get excited about it for sure.”

He was watching the NFL games in the clubhouse before and after the game. Does the former Notre Dame All-America wide receiver ever think about playing football?

“Nope,” he said.

* Cubs left-hander Tom Gorzelanny threw 40 pitches in his second bullpen session Sunday at Miller Park but no word as to when that would be. Gorzelanny has been rehabbing since being hit on the left hand by a line drive Sept. 1.
