9/21 Cashner vs. Posey

Andrew Cashner has faced Buster Posey a few times before Tuesday, including in the Arizona Fall League, and the Giants rookie got the best of the Cubs pitcher. Posey hit a game-winning home run with one out in the eighth to give the Giants a 1-0 victory over the Cubs.

“That’s the best stuff I’ve had in a while,” Cashner said. “My breaking ball was real good tonight, my fastball was really good, my command was really good. I tried to go away and the ball ran back in. It was still a good pitch. You just have to tip your cap and go after the next guy and go after the next hitter.”

It didn’t help that he fell behind 3-1 to Posey.

“That’s not what you want to do right there to the four-hole hitter,” Cashner said. “I wanted to work ahead and threw him a good slider and he didn’t swing at it. If I’m going to get beat, I’m going to get beat on my best stuff and he beat me.”

Cashner had not given up a run in 6 2/3 innings prior to Posey’s shot, his 15th homer of the season. That’s the most by a Giants rookie since Chris Brown hit 16 in 1985. Posey’s 62 RBIs are the most by a Giants rookie since Chili Davis drove in 76 in 1982.

“He’s a great hitter,” Cashner said of the Giants catcher. “He’s been up for awhile and he’s helped them a lot. He’s at the hardest position, too, behind the plate. He’s a great hitter.”
