10/2 Z lobbies for Dunn

Looking ahead to next season, Carlos Zambrano says the Cubs need another big bat in the lineup. And he has the right man for the job in Adam Dunn.

“I want that guy,” Zambrano said. “He wants to play for us, not only this year but two years ago. He told me he wants to play at Wrigley Field badly.”

The Cubs pitcher said Dunn said he wanted to take aim at Wrigley Field in 2008 when he was traded by the Reds to the Diamondbacks. This year, Dunn was batting .260 with 38 homers and 103 RBIs for the Nationals. Aramis Ramirez leads the Cubs with 25 homers and 83 RBIs.

“When you see a guy who wants to play for an organization and he wants to give everything he has for that organization, that says a lot,” Zambrano said. “I want to see him here next year here but if we can’t sign him, we can’t do it.”

Zambrano said the Cubs need someone in the mix to protect Ramirez and Marlon Byrd. The team dealt Derrek Lee, who had been the No. 3 hitter, to the Braves on Aug. 13 and Xavier Nady took over at first. Nady will be a free agent after this season.

“We need that extra bat in the lineup next year,” Zambrano said.

Big Z should put his money where his mouth is. If he is serious about Adam Dunn, then perhaps, Zambrano should offer to restructure his contract to assist the team so Jim Hendry doesn’t have throw more money away. Yes, the Cubs need a solid-hitting firstbaseman, preferably one that can play solid defense as well, but Big Z should prove he is the leader that he thinks he is by making the offer. That would prove that he puts the team first and is committed to winning. It might also get the critics off his back. Just saying…

It’s not Z’s fault Hendry foolishly threw money away making it more difficult to spend money this off season. Hendry is the culprit for running the well dry. Nor is is it Z’s responsablilty to re-distribute HIS wealth. Also, one has to wonder how Z will feel after Dunn’s inferior defense at 1B costs him some runs or even games. With all that said, sure it would be nice for some obviously overpaid Hendry contract mistakes like Z’s to “give back” some dough to the team because the GM is a fool, but I would have to think the group should include Soriano and Fukodome? Why shouldn’t they pony up as well to “help” the inferior GM spend THEIR MONEY on ANY player that would improve the team? What would really be nice to see if all the players forked over some cash to the Ricketts in order to pay off Hendry and send him paking.
