11/5 AFL update
Kyle Smit was charged with a blown save but wound up with the win in the Mesa Solar Sox’s 7-4 victory Thursday over the Peoria Javelinas in Arizona Fall League play. Jake Muyco, who split the season between Double-A Tennessee and Triple-A Iowa, started the game and gave up three runs on six hits and two walks over four innings. Chris Carpenter pitched 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief and Smit entered the game in the seventh with a 4-3 lead. He gave up a leadoff single but got the next batter to hit into a double play. Cord Phelps then homered, his first, to tie the game at 4. The Solar Sox rallied with three runs in their half of the seventh. Chicago native David Cales, who played at Tennessee and Iowa this season, took over in the eighth for Smit (3-1, 2.70 ERA) and was credited with a hold. Smit was acquired from the Dodgers in the Ted Lilly-Ryan Theriot-Blake DeWitt trade last July. The Solar Sox travel to Surprise Friday, and on Saturday, Carpenter and Josh Vitters were scheduled to play in the Rising Stars game.
