11/10 AFL update

The Mesa Solar Sox rallied for six runs in the ninth inning to beat the Surprise Rafters, 7-5, in Arizona Fall League play Tuesday. The Pirates’ Andrew Lambo hit a walkoff grand slam for the win. Ryan Flaherty was the only Cubs prospect to play, and he entered as a pinch-runner and scored. He’s batting .317, including a .409 average with runners on. The Solar Sox play host to Phoenix on Wednesday, and Cubs prospect Jake Muyco (0-2, 9.18 ERA) is slated to start.

Carrie, I read that both Mitch Atkins and Jeff Grey are minor league free agents. Is this true? If so, do you know why Hendry is allowing them to become free agents? Wasn’t Atkins a high draft pick and Grey the centerpiece in the Jake Fox to Oakland trade, Hendry comparing Grey to Angel Guzman (his talent not injury prone)?

Atkins looks like a big league pitcher physically, but has yet to have success in his brief stints with the Cubs that he has had in the Minors. And there are other kids in the system who are passing him by. Jeff Gray suffered a groin injury in a freak incident just before Spring Training began, and took forever to get healthy. I saw him in October, and he’s OK now, has a game plan, and should be ready to go this spring. Can’t blame the GM for that.

I don’t blame Hendry for injuries, he is the one however that allows minor leaguers to become free agents right?
And now Snyder is added to the list. I’m not saying any of these players are worth crying over if we lose them. What I was wondering is if Grey is the player from Oakland for Miles and Fox? It seems to me that the more free agents allowed to leave the more the organization is mis-evaluating young talent. 8 years in the minors for Snyder? and Hendry couldn’t show the same patience/confidence in McGhee? What’s with that???

Snyder didn’t spend all eight years in the Cubs system, only 2 plus. Yes, Gray was acquired in the deal that sent Aaron Miles & Jake Fox to the A’s

And, Snyder was the Indians’ first-round pick in the 2003 Draft.
